Diabetes is a growing public health challenge in Nigeria, affecting an estimated 4 million adults (WHO, 2022). With a 5.77% prevalence rate, urban areas experience higher cases due to lifestyle and dietary changes (IDF, 2021). Many cases remain undiagnosed due to low awareness and limited screening, leading to serious complications like heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and amputations.
In 2020, diabetes caused 22,497 deaths in Nigeria, accounting for 1.52% of total deaths (WHO). Nigeria ranks 82nd globally in diabetes-related mortality, highlighting the urgent need for better prevention, early detection, and management.
At CANN Foundation Nigeria, we collaborate with government agencies, healthcare providers, policymakers, and NGOs to raise awareness, promote screening, and advocate for prevention strategies.
Support Our MissionHypertension, or high blood pressure, is a growing public health crisis in Nigeria, affecting nearly 30% of adults. Despite its prevalence, many cases remain undiagnosed due to low awareness and limited access to regular screenings. Poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and inadequate healthcare contribute significantly to its rise, especially in urban areas.
If left unmanaged, hypertension can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and vision loss. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases—many linked to hypertension—are the leading cause of death in Nigeria. The increasing number of hypertension-related fatalities underscores the need for urgent action.
At CANN Foundation Nigeria, we work with relevant stakeholders including government agencies, healthcare providers, and community leaders to raise awareness, promote early detection, and advocate for prevention strategies.
